BackYard Produce
About Us
Healthy soil begets a healthy plant so we use biodynamic preps, composting, mineralization, intercropping, soil amending, crop rotation, green cropping, intercropping/intense planting techniques, mulching, soil amendments and companion planting to maintain a healthy garden and micro environment. We save seed and trade with local gardeners for seed. I purchase from seed houses that pledge to use gmo-free seed and always will. We blend yester year wisdom with the best of forward thinking practices and it works well for us. Cradle to cradle is the concept we work toward and each year we incorporate new ideas that favor this the cradle to cradle concept.
Ingredients We Use
I save seed from our best performers and grow it the next season. I also trade with local seedsavers to increase my selection of hand saved seed. I purchase from seed sources that are commited to biodiversity and pledge to exclude gmo seeds from thier inventory.
Our Practices
Heirloom dried beans are from Carlson farms outside of Grand Rapids and are genuine Michigan dried beans. Never more than a season old and you can tell in the taste. Grown without herbcide, weeds are pulled instead. Seed is inoculated, beans are machine harvested. If you have not had the pleasure of eating fresh dried beans you are in for a treat!
Apples, cider and butter from Earth First farms outside of Berrien Springs. Certified organic and thier delicious cider won 3rd place in 2009 for cider. The only time an organic producer has ever placed in a Michigan cider contest. Look out next year!
Beef Jerky is a product of The Poor Handmaidens of Christ in Donaldson, Indiana. MSG free and needs to be refrigerated if not eaten right away. Do not expose to periods of intense or long sun, leave in the car or backpack for long periods of time.
