A Little History about our Co-op

In 2008, several Michiana families noticed that despite an abundance of local farms, the products from their grocery stores came from thousands of miles away, often coated with preservatives to make the long journey. The classic example is that of organic black beans coming from China. Just think of the distance and questions about "organic" that arise.

Finding these local farmers and locating this food had been a challenging task. So, they began working with a few Michiana farmers, hoping for a reasonably priced, local and convenient alternative. Their vision has expanded to include many more families and farmers in the Michiana region.

At the time, of its inception, the South Bend area lacked a food cooperative. How could South Bend not have one? Rather than starting a true for-profit business whose goal is to make money (not that there is anything wrong with that) - the originators of the Purple Porch Co-op wanted a more community approach to food. They felt there was much to be gained by being a cooperative.

From May 2009 through March 2010 the Co-op was fortunate to have a wonderful partnership with Good Shepherd Montessori School in South Bend, IN. During that time, the food distribution took place the school's cafeteria.

In April 2010, the Co-op moved its distribution a couple miles down the road to LangLab, a multi-use facility in South Bend, IN. The building is a very large old warehouse (in great shape) that will allow for growth. This has proven to be a good move for growth and autonomy.

During the Winter of 2011, the Co-op finally received the ability to accept SNAP benefits (aka food stamps). It was a bit of a challenge because of our phone limitations. But the Co-op has in fact become the first (and still only) farmers market to accept SNAP benefits in South Bend/Mishawaka.

PotluckThe Co-op enters its 3rd year in the Spring of 2011. It continues to grow both in food diversity/volume and membership. The monthly Potluck has been a favorite of many - to share good (and often local) food and conversation.

And, something for the kids!
